Game-based bespoke learning is when gaming principles are applied within eLearning activities to engage and motivate learners to learn better. The motivational psychology involved allows learners to engage with learning materials in a lively and dynamic way.

For example, games within the content can enhance active learning and promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

However, this technique is not just about creating fun learning environments for learners to explore but also about designing learning activities that can incrementally introduce concepts and guide learners towards an end goal. Although, these techniques do not necessarily result in improved learning outcomes.

Gamification vs Game-based Learning

Gamification and Game-based learning are similar in that both strategies promote engagement and sustain motivation in learning.

Is is the integration of game elements into “conventional” learning activities to increase engagement and motivation. For example, point systems, leaderboards, badges, or other game elements. It involves designing learning activities so that game characteristics and principles are central to the eLearning course.
In an ideal gamified learning environment, learners can compete or gain a sense of solidarity with their peers. Usually, the learner will play the game alone. It does not involve other learners or peers in the activity.
It applies game elements or a game framework to existing learning activities. It designs learning intrinsically game-like activities.
