Gamification can be defined as the application of game elements in a non-game environment or activity. Gamification is fast emerging in eLearning as an effective technique to engage learners, as gamification elements draw on natural human needs to collect, compete and succeed.

Gamification strategies use rewards to incentivise and engage players to accomplish desired learning tasks. The tips range from providing points, achievement badges or levels, a progress bar, or providing the user with virtual currency. Providing leaderboards can also encourage players to complete, especially if rewards for accomplishing tasks visible to other players.

Gamification vs Game-based Learning


Gamification and Game-based learning are similar in that both strategies promote engagement and sustain motivation in learning.

However, the following table distinguishes Gamification and Game-based learning: –

Gamification Game-based
Is is the integration of game elements into “conventional” learning activities to increase engagement and motivation. For example, point systems, leaderboards, badges, or other game elements. It involves designing learning activities so that game characteristics and principles are central to the eLearning course.
In an ideal gamified learning environment, learners can compete or gain a sense of solidarity with their peers. Usually, the learner will play the game alone. It does not involve other learners or peers in the activity.
It applies game elements or a game framework to existing learning activities. It designs learning intrinsically game-like activities.
